Regularly changing your WiFi password is a good security practice. Follow these
general steps to change your WiFi password on most router brands.
General Steps to Change WiFi Password
-
Access your router's web interface:
- Connect your computer to your router (via WiFi or ethernet cable)
- Open a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.)
- Type your router's IP address in the address bar (usually 192.168.1.1 or
192.168.0.1)
-
Login to your router:
- Enter your username and password
- If you haven't changed them before, try the default credentials (typically
"admin" for both)
- If defaults don't work, check the router's label or manual for the correct
credentials
-
Navigate to Wireless or WiFi Settings:
- Look for menu options like "Wireless", "WiFi", "WLAN", or "Network"
- Then find "Wireless Security", "Security Settings", or "Password"
-
Change the WiFi Password:
- Look for fields labeled "Password", "Passphrase", "Network Key", or "Pre-Shared
Key"
- Enter your new WiFi password
- Choose a strong password (minimum 12 characters, mix of letters, numbers, and
symbols)
-
Save and Apply Changes:
- Click "Save", "Apply", "OK" or a similar button to confirm your changes
- Your router will likely restart or apply the new settings
- All connected devices will be disconnected and need to reconnect using the new
password
-
Reconnect Your Devices:
- Connect to your WiFi network using the new password on all your devices
- Verify that all devices can connect successfully
Write down your new password in a secure
location. If you forget it, you may need to reset your router to factory defaults.
