About IP Addresses
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique identifier assigned to any device connected to a network. There are two types of IP addresses that are relevant to most users:
Public IP Address
Your public IP address is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and identifies your network on the internet. This is the address that websites and online services see when you connect to them. The public IP address shown above is your current public IP.
Private IP Address
Private IP addresses are used within your local network and are typically assigned by your router. Common private IP ranges include:
- 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255
- 10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255
- 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255
Why Check Your IP?
There are several reasons you might need to know your public IP address:
- Setting up remote access to a home network
- Configuring security features or firewall rules
- Troubleshooting network connection issues
- Verifying VPN functionality
- Checking if your IP has changed (for dynamic IPs)
